Old Blog: From the latest “what the hell”

by ScottGeek 10. April 2006 14:15

It is somewhat interesting to observe, in these times of “over-reacting” (as-if that’s a new idea)…how the modern day students express their anger or “hatred” towards one another (as-if that’s new to a generation)… what is new, the over-meddling of the schools and parents…now given human nature…it’s not a big surprise that these folks react the way they do after last decade of extreme violence in our schools. Like all things of this nature, there are deeper issues that go un-resolved…especially, when those that can make a difference don’t make the effort.
So what, am I going on about? –A student posted hate comments on a web site along with verbiage about committing violence towards a fellow student— yes, that student should be suspended and given anger management…such things need to be handled by the students and the parents with the school being a moderator… now, there’s a twist to this...(and yes…stuff like this has happened in the past)…the twist…other students read the violence treats and possibly commented on those treats on the web site…reaction, the school suspended not only the threatening student but anyone that read and possibly commented on the treats. Now, of course, it’s easy to predict the reaction to this from those whose impose their morality on others- basic and simple- persecute everyone involved….suspend the lot…no questions asked… the interesting part… that even reading such a discourse will cause you to be punished… what’s next- the thought police? – Wait, we already have those…and they are the judges in charge in this case.
Now, certainly…one can not dismiss threats…especially…if they are escalated beyond a certain point…but over-reacting doesn’t fix the problem…in fact, if anyone is actually paying attention…over-reacting a lot of times leads to even bigger problems…Wars begin…CIA agents are “outted”…and our Society becomes a lot less than it should be.
Now in all of this…the central thread of thought seems to be around the idea of these students forming a “Hate Group”- gee, I wonder where they learned that? So, in terms of this incident being how to punish an under-age hate group- maybe someone needs to learn how to talk with the students…as oppose to trying to polarize and win their opinions based on some pseudo morality? Remember, when folks did that…talk with one another in a civil manner? But, more than often enough…the norm is to express oneself in terms of hatred and how everyone outside “our” group is wrong—if nothing else…looks like the kids have learn that lesson well!
